Postnatal depression (PND) is a common but often overlooked mental health condition affecting women after childbirth. Symptoms such as persistent sadness, fatigue, difficulty bonding with the baby, and loss of interest in daily activities can significantly impact both the mother’s well-being and the child’s development. Globally, about 10-15% of new mothers experience postnatal depression, with higher prevalence rates reported in low-resource settings like Nigeria (World Health Organization, 2023).
In Taraba State, where access to healthcare is limited and cultural stigmas surrounding mental health persist, many women remain unaware of postnatal depression and its management options. Traditional beliefs often attribute postpartum emotional struggles to spiritual causes, discouraging women from seeking medical help. This study investigates the level of awareness and management of postnatal depression in Taraba State, highlighting gaps in knowledge and healthcare services.
Postnatal depression is a significant public health issue in Taraba State, yet awareness and management of the condition remain critically low. Many new mothers lack access to information about PND, and healthcare providers are often undertrained in diagnosing and treating the condition. The cultural stigmatization of mental illness further prevents women from seeking help, leading to untreated cases and adverse outcomes for both mothers and children.
Despite its prevalence, PND has received limited attention from researchers and policymakers in Taraba State. This study aims to address this gap by assessing the awareness levels and management practices related to postnatal depression among women and healthcare providers in the state.
The study focuses on women of childbearing age in Taraba State, particularly those who have recently given birth. It also includes healthcare providers involved in maternal and child health services. Limitations include potential underreporting of symptoms due to stigma and limited generalizability of findings to other regions.
